Germany’s arcades have remained open during the second partial lockdown through the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is contrary to what happened earlier in the year with the first wave of infections and now it is looking forward to the Christmas trading period, with conditions.

Major operator the Gauselmann Group is complying with the hygiene regulations using a “C-traffic light” system of its own devising. It is an automated access system for indoor use, measuring visitor flow using infra-red sensor technology. It is a simple traffic light with two phases: if it shows green, more people can enter; if it is red, the maximum number has been reached.

The number of people that represents the maximum in the location can be pre-set using a radio remote control.

Said Jendrik Volkmann, product manager at adp Gauselmann: “If the C-traffic light is correctly positioned, it makes it easier for guests and operators to do business, without breaking the bank.”

He added: “The automated access system can be used across industries. The admission lights have already been used in retail, educational institutions and sports clubs as well as at political events. In order to adapt the C-traffic light to market requirements, the system is constantly being further developed.”
