The New South Wales regulator will fine under-18s AU$2,200 or more if they are found to be illegally gambling in the Australian state’s casinos as part of a compliance effort in the festive season.

Liquor & Gaming New South Wales will also ban for 12 months those who are caught in a casino.

The compliance operation will run into early January.

Jane Lin, L&GNSW’s executive director of regulatory operations, said minors caught breaking the rules could be excluded for a period from their 18th birthday, meaning they will be prohibited from casino visits until they are at least 19.

She added: “Minors will also not be allowed to keep any winnings from gambling and will leave empty-handed.

“We have also reminded the casino operators of their obligations to prevent minors from entering casinos including by ensuring that casino staff are checking IDs where necessary.”
