Spain’s gambling market grew by 28.4 per cent across 2023, with casino activity accounting for just over half of the country’s €1.2bn gross gaming revenue.


The casino segment, which was worth €624.8m, grew 25.3 per cent year-on-year, with slots gaining “increasingly higher market shares” in casino activity since their launch in 2015, according to the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling.

The regulator’s report said slots represented 61.6 per cent of the casino segment, rising 28.1 per cent year-on-year.

The betting segment is also on the rise in Spain, with its share of GGR increasing by 36.6 per cent year-on-year to account for 39.8 per cent of total GGR.

“The growth is due to in-play sports betting, which increased by 48.7 per cent, and pre-match betting increased 15.3 per cent,” the DGOJ said, adding that other fixed-odds betting modalities also increased by 191.9 per cent in 2023.

Across 2023, the poker segment in Spain was worth 8.5 per cent (€115.3m) of the market.

The DGOJ said revenue here rose by 16.9 per cent.

The monthly average of active game accounts was 1.16m, up 9.8 per cent year-on-year. And while monthly average new game accounts dropped by one per cent, deposits and withdrawals rose by 15.5 per cent and 10.1 per cent, respectively.
