American Gaming Association CEO Bill Miller has called on the US industry to do more to tackle problem gambling.

In an opinion piece for USA Today, he noted that the illegal market is “shrinking” and has declined from US$150bn to “about $64bn last year.”

“In 2019, less than half of online bets took place legally; today, more than 3 out of 4 occur in legal, regulated markets,” he added.

However, Miller said that states should dedicate funding to advance responsible gaming education and problem gambling services, “not divert it for general use.”

“This includes funding for proactive consumer education, research and problem gambling treatment – building upon our industry’s investments in responsible gaming tools and education.”

Miller also called on states to “ensure help is easily accessible” by allowing advertisers to “promote a single, national hotline.”
