Crown Melbourne, the largest casino in Australia, will not be benefitting from the wave of reopenings after Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the city was reentering Stage 3 lockdown for another six weeks.
The renewed lockdown comes into force on Wednesday night at midnight, with residents barred from leaving their homes for any purpose other than work, food, exercise, or medical care. Restaurants and cafes must return to takeaway and delivery services only, while all entertainment venues, including Crown Melbourne, are forced to close.
“These are unsustainably high numbers of new cases. We know we’re on the cusp of something very, very bad if we don’t take these steps today,” Andrews explained.
The number of new Covid-19 cases has been spiking upward in recent days, with 164 cases confirmed on Tuesday alone.
Crown Resorts ordinarily derives the majority of its income from the Crown Melbourne facility. It has been closed since March 23, but resumed in-person dining on June 1 as an initial step toward reopening. The new lockdown, however, thrusts it back into business suspension for at least the next six weeks, with only delivery and takeout food services being possible.
