MGM and Caesars hackers ‘targeted three other companies’

The hackers who hit MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment recently also breached the systems of three other companies in the tech, retail and manufacturing space.

According to Reuters, the chief security officer of identity management group Okta said that five of it’s the group’s clients had fallen prey to hacking groups since August. This includes MGM and Caesars.

The CSO declined to name the other firms, while noting that the firm was cooperating with official investigations.

David Bradbury notes that Okta services some 17,000 customers worldwide and that multiple breaches of its customers last month resulted in the issuance of an alert.

“We saw this happened in such a small period of time and we thought we should be coming forward to the industry at large and explaining what’s happening here,” Bradbury told Reuters.

Bradbury says that the US customers had identified a series of attacks where hackers impersonated employees, convincing the IT help service to provide duplicate accesses.

“We’ve seen consistently over the past six to 12 months, a ramp up in these types of attacks,” notes Bradbury.

The hack is believed to have been carried out by two hacker groups known as Scattered Spider and ALPHV, who acted as “business associates.”
