Record losses are shown in the annual report for 2020 released by Holland Casino, the 14-venue monopoly operator in the Netherlands.

The pandemic meant that it was only able to open its casinos for 71 days during the year and the result is that profits fell by 54 per cent to €333m and footfall dropped by 60 per cent to 2.5 million.

The average spend per visitor, however, rose a little, from €117 to €133, reported the company. It announced a loss before tax of €80.7m, down 190 per cent from its 2019 level.

CEO Erwin van Lambaart said: “Despite the severe financial headwinds, we have managed to continue to serve the long-term interests of the organisation in 2020.

“In addition to making important investments in our future online offering, our strategic co-operation with ESPN, as well as the construction of two new venues in Venlo and Utrecht, we are also investing significantly in our compliance department, which further enhances the quality of our prevention and AML policies.”
