A final report has been issued as the UK’s first-ever inquiry into crime linked to gambling draws to a close.

It calls for a “greater central drive” from the Ministry of Justice and Home Office, as well as the creation of a national board to address crime linked to gambling. It also advocates for greater funding to reduce crime and support those affected.

The Commission on Crime and Gambling Related Harms was set up in 2019 to investigate the links between crime and gambling-related harms, as well as its broader impact and potential preventative measures.

It was chaired by Lord Peter Goldsmith KC and set up by the Howard League for Penal Reform.

“It is time for action,” declared Goldsmith. “Our recommendations point the way ahead for politicians, policymakers and everyone working to prevent crime.”
