Legislation supported by Las Vegas Sands has been introduced to authorise a Texas referendum to legalise destination casinos in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

House and Senate companion bills call for $2bn investments in Dallas and Houston and $1bn in Austin and San Antonio.

It also would authorise sports betting, limited gaming at horse and dog racetracks and allow the state’s three federally recognised tribes to negotiate gaming compacts for full casinos. Slot machine revenue would be taxed 25 per cent and table revenues 10 per cent.

LVS has said Dallas is its preferred location. It estimates Texas casinos could generate $8bn to $10bn in annual gaming revenue. The bills need two-thirds support in both chambers and statewide referendum approval.
