A new casino is to be built in Shippensburg Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, following the approval of plans by the state Gaming Control Board.

It has granted a Category 4 licence to operator Greenwood Gaming and Equipment, through its parent company GW Cumberland, to build the casino. The company already operates the Parx Casino (pictured) in Shippensburg.

The venue will be a mini casino, the fourth in Pennsylvania and 17th casino in the state overall. It is hoped to open for slots play and a sportsbook, plus table games, before the end of this year.

The granting of the licence came after a four-year battle that has dragged out through the pandemic and occasional public opposition that prevented a mini casino being opened in nearby Carlisle and Boiling Springs.

The Shippensburg site is in an empty former major store and work should begin on reshaping the location next month. It will have 500 slots and 48 electronic table games, a sports bar and restaurant.
