A new bill which would legalise several forms of gambling, including casinos, sports betting and a state lottery, has been unveiled in the Alabama legislature.

The constitutional amendment proposes to legalise casino gaming in 10 locations, as well as sports wagering, a statewide lottery and creating a gaming commission.

Republican Rep. Andy Whitt leads the group of legislators who are working on the bill.

If the bill passes the Legislature, it would be put to voters to decide during the general election in November.

Revenues from casinos and sports betting would, it is proposed, top up the General Fund Budget Reserve Fund from $150m to $300m, and from then on would mostly go to a gaming trust fund, with the county commissions where casinos are located also taking a cut.
