Adelson lobbies for Texas casinos

Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson is spending $4.5m to lobby for casinos in the US state of Texas, KXAN-TV has reported.

Adelson has hired eight lobbyists ahead of the legislative session beginning in January to push for a bill offering revenues for windstorm insurance and flood damage.

Legislators supporting gaming are also motivated by neighbour states taking money from Texans. There is a casino near the Texas border in every adjacent state, State Representative Joe Deshotel told KXAN.

Casino legislation is introduced in every biennial legislative session. Already this time, there are proposals to allow coastal casinos.

There are also the perennial efforts to allow the Alabama-Coushatta Indians near Houston and the Tigre tribe near El Paso to operate casinos on tribal lands.
