According to newly published study results, around 20 per cent of adults in the US bet money on sports during the past year, says Associated Press.
The report, by the Pew Research Center, said that 19 per cent of adults surveyed had wagered on sports, the most common of this being with friends or family. This might be a private betting pool, fantasy league or a casual bet.
Only eight per cent said that they placed bets in person in a casino, racetrack or kiosk and six per cent said that they had wagered online.
The conclusion reached by the report was that while sports betting was increasing rapidly, there remained plenty of room for expansion. Thirty-one US states now offer legalised sports betting.
