A group of residents in Taunton in the US state of Massachusetts are not giving up their fight against a proposed Mashpee Wampanoag tribal casino.
The group has filed a new lawsuit claiming the decision by the US Department of the Interior to reaffirm the Mashpee’s reservation is unlawful because the tribe was not federally recognised in 1934 and therefore does not meet requirements for the definition of Indian under the Indian Reorganisation Act.
They also say that a tribal casino in Taunton would alter and dominate the neighborhood, the Cape Cod Times reported. The group was behind the 2016 lawsuit of the same nature that derailed the casino and led to the tribe losing its land under the Trump administration. The Biden administration reversed that decision and reaffirmed the tribe’s land in trust in December.
