The prospect of a new casino licence being issued for the Fontainebleau Resort in Florida, US, has been quashed by US Senate president Wilton Simpson.

In an interview with CBS Miami and reported in Florida Politics, Simpson said that in the upcoming Special Session of the Senate there is “no contemplation” of  issuing a licence for the resort.

The ruling puts paid to speculation that when the Florida legislature reconvenes to discuss a new gaming compact with the Seminole Tribe, there would be a move to transfer resort owner Jeff Soffer’s licence from his Big Easy Casino in Hallandale Beach to the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami.

The Special Session is due to take place from May 17 and one of its principal targets is to come to a deal with the Seminoles, setting out a long-term plan for gaming in the state.
