The problems faced by Imperial Pacific International’s casino operation in Saipan, in the Northern Mariana Islands of the Pacific, have forced the local casino regulator to close down.
A new governor has taken the decision to shut the doors of the Commonwealth Casino Commission offices in Siapan following the problems at IPI, which apparently owes the government over $100m, part of which would have funded the commission.
The operator has struggled with financial problems for more than 10 years and became the subject of federal investigations. Now Marianas Variety is reporting that Governor Palacios has taken action over the financial crisis.
If there is no casino, then the island does not need a regulator, he argued, and closed the office down.
