On Friday, February 26th, 2021 the Houston Texans have decided to release their running back Duke Johnson as well as their center Nick Martin. The Houston Texans traded a third round draft pick to acquire Johnson from the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Martin was selected by the Houston Texans with the 50th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Johnson was primarily a back up running back for the Houston Texans. During the 2019 – 2020 NFL season he backed up running back Carlos Hyde, and the following year he backed up David Johnson who the Houston Texans acquired in the controversial trade for DeAndre Hopkins with the Arizona Cardinals.

During the 2020 – 2021 season of the National Football League with the Houston Texans Duke Johnson rushed for a total of 235 yards on 77 carries and 1 rushing touchdown. Known as being a reliable pass catching running back Duke had a poor year catching passes out of the back field. Last season he gained only 249 receiving yards on 28 receptions as well as 1 touchdown reception.
