Primal Hunt Slot Review (BetSoft)

It’s already Halloween season people, or as we like to call it, Spooktober! But before we look at what the developers have conjured up to go with the season’s hype, we still have some September releases to take through the paces. Wondering why? That is because of the abnormally high volume of new slots coming your way. Not a bad thing entirely because it shows that the developers are doing their part, at least!

Anyway, one of the few September releases we are yet to review is Primal Hunt from Betsoft. Getting straight to the gist of the matter, this is one for those drawn to the more laid back style of slot gameplay. Yes, nothing much really; just a 5X4 grid slot with nothing but wilds and a bonus round with modifiers to flaunt. But just how far can the wins go? Let us find out!

Slot Overview

Starting with the theme, Primal Hunt takes you back to the Ice Age in Europe for a primal lion hunt. Not your typical lion, though, as this particular species became extinct over 14000 years ago. It’s funny to see that the developers did not even bother to look up what a mountain lion looked like as theirs resembles Diego from the Ice Age franchise, who is a saber-toothed tiger and nothing close to looking like a cave lion. And speaking of primal, the adventure will involve hunting like the native Indians did, in primeval fashion, with just your brute strength, loincloth, medieval weapons, and the prey.

Spinning takes place on five reels onto which symbols descend in fours on each spin. Not the most enticing of layouts, to be honest, but the color mix is superb, placing you right inside a cave with petroglyph deco. The audio production is not off either, being a rumble of traditional instruments and the jingle of bone tools when the reels are in motion.

Players can start exploring the cave with bets ranging from 0.2-22 units of the currency in use. Not the most inclusive bet range there, but with good reason. The slot’s math algorithm runs on medium volatility, which tends to lean more on the high side. That means that playing can feel like battling the cave lion with your bare hands at times. It also means that there is potential for some decent hits, which we will mention a bit later. Till then, a friendly Return to Player percentage of 96.1% watches our six as we search vehemently for this mighty beast.

Because it’s a grid slot, players get eighty win lines to land winners. Of course, combinations only warrant a payout when lined up from left to right. On to the actual paytable, players find high, mid, and low payers. The premiums include medieval weapons and the star of the game who may decide to show up stacked on any spin. Mids are all engravings but differently colored, while the usual blackjack fillers represent the lows. Three to five of a kind pay 0.1-0.5X, 0.3-1.5X, and 0.7-10X for the lows, mids, and premiums, respectively.

Wild cards are also thrown into the mix, appearing as standard wilds or multiplier wilds in the free spins (discussed later). Both replace any regular payer except for the lion, while multiplier wilds ship with modifiers of X2 or X3.

Bonus Round

A cave lion about to pounce on prey represents the scatter symbol. Land three, four, and five of them to trigger eight, twelve, and twenty free spins, plus payouts of 8X, 16X, and 96X, respectively. The good thing is that these prizes can be retriggered even when the free spins session is in progress.

As already mentioned, wilds can show up with an X2 or X3 modifierss here. If you were to get three wilds with multipliers of X3, for instance, you earn a booster multiplier of X27.

Primal Hunt — Our Verdict

Like a typical release from BetSoft, Primal Hunt certainly looks good with solid graphics that place you in prehistory to experience the thrills and chills of the primal hunt as intended. Still, spectacular graphics can only count for so much in a slot.

Luckily, Primal Hunt puts up quite a show when it comes to the mathematical side of things. Wilds show up stacked, combining with the modifiers and a strong paytable to deliver wins of up to 4420 times the bet!
