If you though that you can only bet on sports, you’re in for a surprise, as Oscar betting is one of those weird bets that will certainly grab your attention. With the upcoming Oscars and after the Golden Globes, the race for the Best Picture has heated up. The Golden Globes were full of surprises and pushed some favorites under the bridge whilst some unexpected ones have risen. One of the biggest surprises is 1917, a war movie.

The betting odds for the Oscars’ Best Picture have the still unreleased war movie 1917 competing for the Oscars after the Golden Globes.

Additionally, Netflix’s The Irishman and Marriage Story also went into the Golden Globes as the lead favorites but missed on all the major awards, joining The Two Popes as the biggest losers of the Golden Globe.

Instead of these, 1917, an epic story about World War I, crafted carefully by Sam Mendes, won the Best Director and the Best Motion Picture – Drama. This surprising win has had a significant impact on the movie’s betting odds of winning an Oscar. According to multiple UK bookmakers, it went from 11/1 to 5/2 and 3/1 sitting at the very top of the favorites with Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, who won the Best Supporting Actor, Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy and Best Screenplay on the Golden Globes, and Parasite, who won the Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes.

1917 has a small cast but the style used to capture the mission of the two soldiers’ through France in the midst of World War I has shocked and amazed numerous reviewers. Caryn James, the BBC reviewer, Alex Godfrey, a critic for Empire and the New York Times all praise the style of this 119-minute drama.

Still, it was a big surprise that the movie has beaten Netflix’s The Irishman, Marriage Story as well as the Joker that won the Golden Globes Actor Awards for Performances in Drama.

Is It Possible that 1917 Can Win The Best Picture?

The judges at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards are different so don’t expect similarities there. The top three favorites are all a story on their own. Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood won the Best Musical/Comedy and not the Drama category, which is common with the Oscars Best Picture. The number of awards received at the Golden Globe makes it the best Tarantino’s work after the Pulp Fiction. As for the Parasite, it has already been shortlisted at the Oscars International Film Category. So far, Tarantino never won the Oscars Best Picture, even though he was nominated three times. We’ll see how the movie fairs at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards on January 19th.

The Biggest Losers at the Golden Globes

The Irishman, Scorcese’s three and a half-hour-long gangster movie, had the biggest fall of all the nominations. The movie had 7/4 odds and now is at 8/1 for the Oscars win. Netflix’s Marriage Story at least won the Best Supporting Actress and it is envisioned that Scarlet Johansson might get the Oscars for Best Actress. However, the film itself was at rather unlikely 5/1 and is now at just 25/1 odds. According to the Golden Globes, both Netflix’s movies have fallen short for the Oscars, but it doesn’t mean that they will lose.
