The demands from the Macau government in the tendering procedure for the six new 10-year operating licences in the territory may be too onerous.

Speculating on how the casino companies will react, Inside Asian Gaming quotes Lam Kai Kong, a veteran of Macau’s gaming industry and director of the Macau Junket Promoters Association.

He said that the details of the tender indicated an “inequality of rights and obligations between concessionaires sand the government.”

Kong said that it could lead to concessionaires being pushed into laying off staff and/or cutting salaries.

The projects demanded of those tendering for the licences include the increasing of international tourism, developing entertainment, holding major sporting events, promoting art and culture, creating themed amusements, promoting Macau as a “city of gastronomy” and others.
