According to GeoComply, the leader in geolocation and anti-fraud solutions for the US iGaming industry, Ohio has successfully launched its regulated online sports betting market.

On the top of the list:

The Vancouver-based software company recorded 11.3 million geolocation transactions in Ohio over the New Year’s weekend. That was more than any other state the technology company was monitoring, including New York, which has about eight million larger population. “The impressive start vaulted Ohio to the top of the list of states with the most geolocation volumes recorded by GeoComply over the New Year’s weekend, even surpassing New York,” the company said.

Legal sports betting launched on January 1:

After legal sports betting began in Ohio on January 1, around 784,000 unique accounts were created over the next two days. Betting activities involved 16 online sportsbook operators and 234,000 geolocation transactions during the first hour of New Year’s Day, according to GeoComply. This technology company provides geolocation verification and fraud-prevention solutions for sports betting operators and monitored the recent launch of legal sports betting in Ohio.

Its Senior Vice President of Compliance, Lindsay Slader, stated: “We are thrilled to welcome another state into the regulated online sports betting sector. As expected, residents of the Buckeye State enthusiastically greeted the market at the moment the calendar changed over to 2023.”

She added: “Today, about 44 percent of the American population can bet online with legal and responsible operators. The launch of regulated online sports betting in Ohio will better protect its citizens, with an increased commitment to responsible gambling and new funding for critical state programs.”

Leading US market position:

Buckeye State launched legal sports wagering on New Year to end the holiday weekend at the leading US market position, followed by New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Michigan in the top five states. Columbus followed with 1.03 million transactions, while Cleveland and Toledo recorded 772,000 and, respectively, 619,000 transactions.
