MGM remains in Japan casino race

MGM Resorts may be in as Melco Resorts and Genting Singapore are out in the contest to build casino resorts in Japan.

Melco and Genting appear to have lost their chances as anti-gaming Takeharu Yamanaka has been elected mayor of Yokohama. He plans to issue a formal statement that Yokohama will not bid for a casino.

That leaves just three jurisdictions left to pursue what is expected to be three megaresorts to be selected by the national government. MGM is the sole candidate in Osaka, where it proposes a $9.09bn project with local partner Orix.

Niki Chyau Fwu is Nagasaki’s casino candidate for a casino in Sasebo City. Private equity firm Clairvest is Wakayama’s candidate. It is leading a consortium of Groupe Partouche and AMSE Resorts Japan on a $4.3bn proposal.
