The lottery operator in Romania has decided its time to expand into other areas of service. This week, CN Loteria Românã , the parent company of Loto Romania, announced it is considering an expansion into the world of fixed-odds and online sports betting.

In preparation, the company issued a notice to the World Lottery Association and The European Lotteries. Members were informed that the company is seeking guidance on how to set up a framework to offer the new services. The sports betting world is big business, and this addition would certainly help to boost the national lottery’s overall earnings.

Help Needed

For Loto Romania, guidance is needed to get started in this new industry. The operator is seeing strategic assistance regarding the funds as well as investment to offer the sports betting framework. Loteria Românã listed in the notice that it plans to review proposals provided by interested parties to operate the online sportsbook and fixed odds betting of the company.

According to sources, submissions must be provided by January 31. In the proposals, interested parties must provide details so that Loteria Românã can decide who to work with. The proposal should include client portfolios along with the systems used for operation, plus an outline as to how the partnership will work with the lottery.

Details of the Romanian Lottery

The government authorized Loto Romania to offer services in the country, operating as the exclusive contractor for services. The operator provides lottery gaming for land-based drawings as well as remote options.

Gambling laws in Romania were reformed back in 2010, allowing operators to obtain licensing to provide online gambling services in the country. The national regulator, Oficiului Național pentru Jocuri de Noroc, is in charge of operations.

Once the gambling laws changed, the licensing process began, and thus far, thirty Class 1 online sportsbook and casino licenses have been provided. Both foreign and domestic operators offer services in Romania including Stanleybet RO, Superbet, and others.

It is unclear if Loteria Românã has an option to offer a sportsbook service. It is likely since the company is calling for proposals to get started in the industry. If not, then licensing would need to be applied for and approved before services could get started.

It will be interesting to see if the national lottery adds to its service options and who will be chosen to work with the provider to get started offering sports betting and fixed odds options in the country.
