While the NFL is based in the United States, the league is considering stretching its reach into international areas, such as Europe. During the recent offseason, the NFL reportedly began to show interest in showcasing games in Germany. A total of seven cities would be open to hosting the football games, becoming a partner with the league.

Coming in 2022

The NFL is currently working with The Sports Consultancy, a company based in London. The goal is to begin hosting NFL games in Germany beginning next year into the 2025 season. According to Sky Sports, the NFL should start receiving proposals from German cities in September.

If this timeline plays out, then the league will have plenty of time to look over the proposals and then choose a partner by next year. The seven cities that have shown interest in hosting professional games remain a mystery. The Sports Consultancy has not revealed any additional details, however, the Department for Education and Sport in Munich said that it is in discussion with the league to host a game.

Munich would be able to host a game at the Allianz Arena. The venue can hold 75,000 people and is the second-largest stadium in the country. Thomas Gross, a spokesperson for the Department, told Sky Sports that the group is waiting to hear from the NFL on what the requirements are to implement a game in Munich.

Additional Details

We do know that Berlin is out of the running for hosting NFL games due to sports promotion laws in the city. The city is always interested in hosting high-profile events, but it seems that they will have to pass on the NFL games, at least at this time.

Hamburg is also another potential city that might request to host a game. However, it seems city officials are concerned that they may not have enough time to pitch their plan before proposals need to be turned in.

While it does seem odd that the NFL would consider hosting games in Germany, it is not uncommon. Back in the early 1990s, the country hosted five preseason football games. The country was also part of NFL Europe and had five teams in action before the league ended back in 2007.

It will certainly be interesting to see all the states that apply to host and which areas the NFL chooses to play games. It will mix up the league a bit and provide a unique setting for the professional players to hit the gridiron.
