Having lagged behind the rest of Europe for some years in converting to cashless payments, Germans are now switching over in growing numbers.

The latest statistics from Euromonitor International show that card payments will overtake cash transactions for the first time in the country as shoppers’ habits change with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The switch-over has been accelerated by the German government’s doubling of the transaction limit on contactless payments to €50.
