Online publication The Star reports that theme park operator Genting Malaysia has thrown its hat into the ring for a Macau casino licence, surprising industry insiders.
Genting, a casino operator in its origin country of Malaysia as well as Singapore and the UK, also has a major theme park at its Malaysian Highlands venue.
A company spokesman said: “This (the casino licence application) represents an opportunity for Genting Malaysia to expand its business in the leisure and hospitality sector, diversify its geographical footprint and participate in the recovery prospects of the Macau gaming segment.”
One of the criteria for applicants for the six gambling licenses in Macau is a willingness to introduce other tourism factors into the territory’s leisure scene, something that Genting has experience with from its integrated casino-theme park resort outside of Kuala Lumpur (pictured).
