On Tuesday, April 20th, 2021 the former tight end of the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco 49ers, Jordan Reed, has announced that he is retiring from playing football in the NFL. Reed cites lingering issues resulting from several concussions as the reason for his early retirement from the National Football League. Jordan is currently only 30 – years – old.
Late last winter Reed visited Orlando’s Plasticity Center in order to get his brain scanned. According to the medical professionals there it was recommended that Jordan retire from playing professional football in the NFL. It took the NFL Pro Bowl tight end a while to ultimately make his decision to retire, but he knows it is the right move for him and his family. We all know the serious consequences of the drain damage resulting from multiple concussions, and Reed wants to be there for his family as his children as he grows older.
“I was pretty sure I was going to keep playing; I was feeling good about where I was at. But then I had some lingering effects and sought out professional help to get diagnosed. They told me it was not a good idea to keep playing. I agreed with them. Before when I had a concussion I would feel better afterwards and I wouldn’t have lingering effects. If I didn’t have any symptoms I would have kept playing. I’m OK with it because I know the reason why I’m making the choice is for family and my children, so I can be there for them. It’s just time,” Reed explained.
Reed was born in New Britain, Connecticut, and he attended New London High School which is located in New London, Connecticut. During his junior year of high school Jordan completed 122 of his 222 passes for 1,706 yards as well as 38 touchdowns. Reed only threw 2 interception while also rushing for 370 yards and 8 touchdowns. He led the New London High School football team to an undefeated season in 2007, and in 2008 he was a finalist for the Joe Montana High School Quarterback of the Year. Reed decided to commit to the University of Florida to play college football for the Gators, and he also received offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Duke, Iowa, Oregon, and Tennessee too.
Reed accepted an athletic scholarship to enroll at the University of Florida, where Jordan played under the Gator’s head coach Urban Meyer as well as the head coach Will Muschamp’s Florida Gators football teams from 2009 to 2012. Reed was initially recruited as a quarterback, but in 2009 he did not play in any games and was redshirted as a true freshman. Following the 2009 NCAA college football season, Jordan transitioned to the tight end position where he flourished. Reed concluded his college football career with 78 receptions for 938 yards and 6 touchdowns. Jordan ultimately decided to forgo his last season of college eligibility in order to enter the NFL Draft after the 2012 NCAA college football season.
Professional Football Career
The Washington Redskins selected the former Florida Gator tight end, Jordan Reed, with the 85th overall pick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He went on to play for the Washington Redskins from 2013 to 2019, and with the San Francisco 49ers during the 2020 – 2021 season of the National Football League. Over the course of his 8 – year NFL career Reed has pulled in 355 pass receptions for 3,602 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns.
The only overall issue with the fast and explosive tight end was that he quite prone to injuries. Jordan suffered at least 7 concussions that were documented, and one concussion during the 2019 NFL preseason sidelined him for the entire 2019 – 2020 NFL season. Jordan also sustained multiple hamstring injuries while playing football in the National Football League. For these reasons the once promising young tight end had to end up retiring from playing professional football in the NFL at an early age of 30 – years – old. It is unfortunate but necessary for the well – being of his long – term health.
