Discrimination against Catalunya gambling halls

There is no reason why gambling locations in the Spanish region of Catalunya should not be reopened, even with limitations and other protocols.

The trade association that represents private gaming operators in the region, PATROJOC, has gone on record as describing itself as “perplexed” that new measures to make commercial activity more flexible announced last week exclude gambling venues.

“We consider that there is no public health reason to lead the Generalitat de Catalunya to exclude our sector in the flexibility of the measures adopted. Not considering private gambling is a manifest and deliberate discrimination of a sector that is especially safe at the health level.

“The control of access to premises in the measures allows us to be very strict with the capacity and to have total traceability if necessary in case of possible infection.”

Its representative, Carlos Duelo, said: “This type of establishment is a business like any other and that additional security measures have been applied, such as the installation of screens between machines, disinfection after use, ventilation and air renewal and other measures.”

Last week the Catalan Ombudsman asked the regional government to asses the reopening of gambling halls as there is no evidence that they had any impact on the spread of the pandemic.
