The Tigre de Cristal integrated casino resort saw its fortunes recover as it switched its focus from tourists to locals amid the pandemic.

Speaking with Asia Gaming Brief, the resort’s COO, Stylianos Tsifetakis, said that before Covid-19 over 90 per cent of the hotel rooms in Tigre de Cristal were occupied by foreign visitors.

When Covid hit, Tigre de Cristal’s team upgraded its website and marketing campaigns to attract locals rather than take the usual tourist-oriented approach.

Tsifetakis said that recently the most popular games on the mass gaming floor have been Russian poker, a variation of poker unique to the local Russian market, followed by roulette and blackjack. Slot machines have always been popular among locals, and the resort’s team put more slot machines on the floor to cater to local demand.

Tsifetakis added that the hotel was virtually full at weekends with domestic staycation visitors.

“We never stop remodelling Tigre de Cristal to keep it up,” said Tsifetakis. “This year we introduced a number of different slot machines to enhance our product offering. Gaming tax in Russia has also been reduced because of Covid and we have more slot machines on the floor.

“We see positive responses from the people and we can see that month-on-month our revenues are growing to pre-Covid levels; if not better.”
