Around R1.4bn (€79.2m) was looted by former executives of South Africa’s National Lotteries Commission (NLC), said the head of the Special Investigative Unit of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee.

The claim was made by the Special Investigative Unit’s head, Andy Mothibi, in a presentation to the commission last week, reports Gaming for Africa.

The money was extracted using alleged non-profit organisations and bogus charities, said Mothibi.

Ineffective precautions had opened the door to the thefts from inside the NLC, he said, and were only uncovered as a result of three investigations carried out by his department over the past two years.

A special tribunal last week moved quickly to freeze over R2.8m (€158,000) of a former NLC official’s assets. Now the investigatory unit, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competitions, and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission and other bodies are coordinating action.
