One of the most familiar entertainments at Las Vegas casinos, the Cirque du Soleil production company, has filed for bankruptcy, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The company has provided spectacular shows at Vegas Strip resort-casinos for over 20 years.

It has six productions on The Strip, but the Canadian-based company said that it was seeking a debt restructuring protection under Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.

Cirque du Soleil said that the situation had been created by the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing shows to close. In March it had 44 shows. It has now laid off 95 per cent of its workforce, including more than 1,300 in Las Vegas. In all, 3,500 employees internationally will now lose their jobs, said the company.
