The New South Wales clubs industry has intensified its debate with premier Dominic Perrottet (pictured) over cashless gambling.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the venues organisation ClubsNSW has stepped up its objections to Perrottet’s proposals that would force every player to use a cashless system when playing poker machines.
Perrottet insists that the recent bad publicity in Australia over the anti-money laundering failures by the country’s casinos indicates that pokies are the main platform for the laundering of illicit cash. A cashless system would also play a part in player protection, he claims.
ClubsNSW has insisted that cashless gaming is a technology that is ‘reckless and unproven.’ Perrottet has responded with suggestions that the organisation is using a scare campaign based on ‘fear and lies.’
An exchange between the clubs’ lobby group and independent member of parliament Helen Dalton has also been well publicised.
Dalton had hit the headlines with her remarks on problem gambling last week. ClubsNSW CEO Josh Landis accused Dalton of being a ‘petty dictator.’
