A record 46.6 million American adults will bet on the 2022 National Football League season, according to research released by the American Gaming Association.
Eighteen per cent of American adults will bet, says the organisation, an increase of three per cent compared with last year.
The spreading of legalised sports betting in the US has seen gamblers moving away from bookmakers and towards regulated options. Twenty-three million will place a bet online this season, up 18 per cent.
10.6 million will place a bet in person at a sportsbook, up two per cent. Only 13 per cent said that they would use a bookmaker, down two per cent.
Sports betting is currently legal in 36 states plus Washington DC and 18 of the 22 states that have NFL teams have legalised sports betting.
